A Day in the Life of a Cybersecurity MSP: Here’s What We Do to Keep Organizations Safe

Find out what we do every day to bring our clients peace of mind by protecting their systems and ensuring their operations run smoothly.

Running a Managed Security Service Provider (MSSP) is exciting but high-stakes. Our clients depend on us to keep their systems optimized, secure, and running smoothly.

Upholding that high standard requires dedication, continuous monitoring, and attention to details that might appear insignificant. Still, it can make the difference between preventing a breach or outage and responding to one.

As the CEO of Defensible Technology, I often get asked, “What does a typical day look like for a cybersecurity MSP?”

Let me take you behind the scenes to show you how we work to keep organizations safe.

Morning: Proactive Defense and Monitoring

As MSPs serve multiple clients with unique IT needs, time management is of the essence. Thanks to our experienced team of security and network experts, we can serve all of our clients efficiently while maintaining the highest standards of security and reliability.

Naturally, this means our days are always busy. The threat landscape is at a point where new vulnerabilities and attack vectors appear every day, and complex IT infrastructures can easily experience outages or performance issues if not carefully monitored and maintained.

For that reason, our mornings are typically filled with tasks that focus on proactive monitoring and ensuring system stability for our clients. This includes:

  • Reviewing overnight alerts
  • Analyzing logs
  • Addressing any flagged issues

We also prioritize scheduled vulnerability scans and patch management in the mornings, which sets the foundation for uninterrupted operations and gives our clients the peace of mind that their IT environments are in capable hands.

Midday: Client Collaboration and System Management

At Defensible, we pride ourselves on our personalized approach to client communication, collaboration, and building trust.

That’s why we hold regular calls and maintain transparent communication with our clients. We are always available on Slack and other channels to address questions, provide updates, and offer real-time support.

We often initiate these conversations ourselves to make sure clients are always in the loop and feel supported.

For instance, we might present findings from a vulnerability scan or explain why user permissions must be updated to mitigate specific risks. Transparency is key—our clients deserve to know where their vulnerabilities lie and how we address them.

On a typical day, we:

  • Host virtual meetings with clients to review their security posture.
  • Engage in threat-hunting exercises to uncover hidden risks.
  • Perform endpoint security checks

Of course, since we focus on providing a full range of cybersecurity and IT management services, our work varies depending on each client's unique needs and priorities.

Some days, we might be conducting comprehensive risk assessments or vulnerability scans, while on others, we’re deploying advanced threat detection tools or fine-tuning access control systems.

Dedication to Constant Learning and Improvement

While our team comprises experts with 20+ years of experience, we know that the cybersecurity landscape constantly evolves, and staying ahead requires continuous learning and adaptation. Threats, technologies, and best practices change rapidly, which is why we prioritize ongoing training, certifications, and research.

On most days, we dedicate portions of our time to advancing our skills, which may include obtaining a new certification or attending a conference where we can learn about new trends and exchange ideas with other experts in the field.

For instance, we recently attended the dattoCON hosted by Kaseya in Miami.

What That Means for Our Clients

Our proactive and personal approach gives our clients the confidence and peace of mind to focus on their core business, knowing their cybersecurity and IT infrastructure is in trusted hands.

It’s because of this dedication and trust that we were named in MSSP Alert’s 2024 List of Top 250 MSSPs.
